Why not just wear sunscreen
Because it is gone before your session is. Between water, sweat and wind, sunscreen on your shoulders and back does not last the way the bottle claims, and reapplying mid session is not realistic. UPF 50+ fabric blocks around 98% of UV rays and keeps doing it until you take the shirt off.
How it should fit
Snug. Loose fabric flaps, bunches under a harness, and catches on the board. You should still have full shoulder rotation, so if you cannot paddle freely it is too small. Two of our men's styles run small, so size up if you are between sizes.
Warm water or cold
The Gradient and Cobalt styles are thin, quick-drying and made for heat. The Fleece-Lined Thermo is for water in the mid 60s to low 70s Fahrenheit, when a wetsuit feels like too much but bare skin is too little. It also works as a layer under a wetsuit.
Wear it wet
A rash guard does its best work wet, cooling you as the water evaporates. Dry on a hot day it can feel warm, so it is session gear rather than an all-day shirt.
Beyond the water
A board shorts fastener on some styles keeps the shirt anchored when you are on a board. Off the water they work for fishing, boat days, snorkeling and anywhere you would otherwise be reapplying sunscreen to your back every hour.
